veneer

A dental veneer is basically a tooth facing made from ceramic. Veneers are a great way to improve the aesthetics of teeth without having to go anything too extensive. Made famous by Hollywood, veneers are worn by many celebrities and demonstrate a great way to get your teeth gleaming!
Veneers are used for people who are unhappy with the colour, shape, size or look of their teeth. they are only used for front teeth and are a quick way to gain the perfect smile. Veneers are made from ceramic and can either be made in a lab such as Da Vinci, Lumineers etc. or, if the cosmetic dentist has CEREC – veneers can be made in around one hour per veneer in surgery whilst you wait!
To fit a veneer, the front of the natural tooth is filed down slightly, the veneer is then made (usually they are extremely thin) and then they are bonded (dentally glued) into place. As they are rather thin, they are not the strongest treatment but with proper care should still last for well over 15 years.
The good thing about veneers is that they require very little of the natural tooth to be altered. This is of benefit to the patient as the more natural tooth you have, the better. Alternative treatments like crowns require more removal of the natural tooth which some patients don’t like the idea of.
Veneers can be easily replaced and re-fitted so, if in a few years’ time the patient decides they want one changed or altered slightly, it is not a big problem.
There are many types of cosmetic dental veneer available, each type is usually named after the laboratory or company that makes them and each type of veneer has its individual uses and benefits. Lumineers for example are extremely thin; they often don’t require any of the natural tooth to be altered in order to fit them. In this case it may not be suitable for everyone to have Lumineers as different patients and different dental cases require slightly different techniques and materials.
Veneers from a cosmetic dentist cost around £300 – £700 per tooth. The price will differ due to the brand of veneer and also the size of it. CEREC veneers usually cost around £500 for example with Lumineers costing considerably more.
Sometimes cosmetic dentists may use composite resin, a white coloured paste-like material to create a veneer. To do this, the dentist applies the composite resin to the tooth and can then file and mould it into the correct shape. Composite resin is a rather weak material however that will only last a few years. It is a good option as it can be very easily changed and altered but ceramic veneers are much better for longevity.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment, or endodontics, is a highly skilled and somewhat tricky procedure that not all dentists carry out. A root canal treatment is necessary when the ‘pulp’ inside the tooth (which contains the tooth’s blood supply and nerves) becomes infected. Infections can arise through damage or injury to the tooth as well as through decay. If not treated promptly, an infection of the pulp can cause a lot of pain and can eventually lead to larger problems such as an abscess forming.

The aim of a root canal treatment is to completely clear out any infection from the inside of the tooth, also known as the ‘pulp chamber’, and from the root canals which contain pulp tissue. The dentist will start the treatment by drilling ‘pilot holes’ into the tooth, exposing the root canals. This can sometimes be a rather difficult task as each tooth varies in where the root canals lie. Once found, the dentist will remove all damaged or infected pulp tissue and will then irrigate the canal using chemicals such as chlorine or bleach to kill any bacteria. If necessary, they will also be able to drain any abscesses found. The patient will then usually have paper cones doused in disinfectant placed into each of the cleaned canals which are then sealed off by a temporary filling. This will allow the disinfectant to fight against bacteria until the next appointment. At the next appointment the dentist will be able to see how effective the first treatment was and if the infection is not completely cleared, more chemical cleaning of the canals may be required. This process may be completed a few times until the infection fully disappears and the dentist is satisfied. This will not be necessary however if the dentist uses the ENDOX system. Using ENDOX, the dentist will be able to make sure that the root canal and pulp chamber are completely sterilised in one (or rarely two) visit(s) without the use of bleaches or chlorine. This is a great benefit for the patient and is much more effective than conventional chemical sterilisation.

After all infection has been removed, the temporary crown can come off, the antiseptic doused paper can be removed and the root canals can be permanently filled with a suitable material, often the material used is a rubbery material called gutta percha. Once the canals are filled, they can be sealed and a permanent crown can be made and placed on top. Either gold or porcelain crowns can be used but if the dentist uses ceramic crowns via the CEREC system it will be possible to construct the crown the same day without temporary crowns being needed. CEREC crowns are made in surgery rather than at a lab so can be designed, made and fitted within an hour – allowing the patient to have a new crown placed on top of their root filled tooth straight after the endodontic treatment. Combined with the fore-mentioned ENDOX system, CEREC will usually allow patients to have a whole root canal treatment completed from start to finish in just one appointment.
